I am a self-taught painter living in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, currently working on a set of 8 X 10 inch oil landscape paintings.
The paintings are quick studies of scenes encountered in the kayak and on the local walking trails.
My preferred painting surface is a treated archival quality aluminum panel.
The panels are primed in gesso, then thin layers of oil paints and glazes are applied to create background colors and textures.
While the surface preparation and the background coloring might take a few days to complete (due to drying times), my goal is to do the actual painting in a single session.
I want to execute a plan, mix the colors once and avoid reworking and rethinking the work.
The panels are then finished with a semi-gloss varnish.
