How you can improve your search results

Some ideas to help you get better search results:

Is your targeted keyword phrase on your home page?

ie. If you are trying to get good search results for the term "Burlington Auto Repairs" make sure that the phrase appears near the top of the page and bold it for extra emphasis.

Make sure all your pages have unique page titles
The page title appears at the top of the browser window, it is not visible on the web page. It is part of the page source code known as the metas title tag.  If you don't have unique titles, the search engines think every page on your site is about the same topic.

Get more incoming links to your home page
Don't buy links - look for trusted links such as business directories, partners, friends and social networks (your facebook or linkedin page). It is not the volume of links, it is the quality and relevence.

Get your full address on the footer of every page
It really helps to identify the location of every page, 70% of all searches are local in nature.

Add more text to your home page
The more well written text on the home page, the better the search results. If you want to search well for a number of phrases, make sure that the phrases are in the text of the home page. (this is critical for smaller sites - less important for big sites)

Avoid having multiple domains pointing at the same site
Just go with one domain name unless you know what your are doing. The search engines will create duplicate indexes for each domain and your results will suffer

Make sure your home page is at the top of the search results for your organization
Something is wrong if your contact us page outranks your home page.

Make sure your home page and web site is readable by the search engines
The search engines index your site based on what they can read on your web pages. They are best at reading text, not so good at pictures, flash and scripts. If you would like to see what the search engines see when they visit your web site go to:  http://sucuri.net/index.php?page=docs&title=text-browser and enter your domain name.
